  • YCL RESCUES ABDUCTED CHILD
    Saptari, May 11: The cadres of the Young Communist League (YCL) today rescued a child who was abducted by an unidentified group from Rupani of Saptari district six days ago. The child was rescued from Sakhuwa Chowk of the district with the help of the local people. When the YCL cadres encountered abductors, the later were taking away the child through Sakhuwa VDC this morning. However, the abductors fled after retaliation and finally Hem Kumar Bhagat, a 14-year-old son of Raj Kumar from Nakati Rayapur VDC-8 was rescued, said District Coordinator of the YCL, Bimal.

  • DEMAND TO RELEASE ANANDI DEVI
    Kathmandu, May 11: Inter-party Women's Network has demanded to release President of Nepal Sadbhavana Party, Anandi Devi with due respect, stating that her abduction is political violence. Organizing a press conference here today, the Network stated that a group of 30/40 persons abducted President Andndi Devi on May 4 from a discussion program on party's authenticity. Vice Chairman of the Network, Urmila Pandey alleged that group of Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Shyam Sundar Gupta committed the crime. She said Minister Gupta also threatened her to abduct and urged the government to take stern action against wrongdoers and guarantee the security of all people.

  • MAOIST LEADER BHATTARAI
    Bhaktapur, May 11: Senior leader of the CPN (Maoist) Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said his party should lead the next government on the basis of political consensus and respecting the people’s verdict. Speaking at an interaction with the industrialists and business community entitled ‘Roadmap of New Nepal and Economic Agendas’ organized by Society for Contemporary Studies here today, Dr. Bhattarai said it is impossible to form the government under any one else’s leadership except the CPN (Maoist). -: 11 :- He pointed out to the possibility of a big revolt by the people if conspiracies are hatched not to allow the Maoists to form the government against the people’s aspirations, calling on the Prime Minister to resign by showing respect to the norms and values of democracy and to the people’s desire. Dr. Bhattarai said the CPN (Maoist) has laid emphasis on industrial capitalism oriented towards socialism for the all-round development of the country and for economic revolution. He added that this would be possible only through the fusion of the natural resources, human resources and science and technology. He also stressed that Nepal should play a role of a dynamic bridge between the two neighbouring countries of China and India for the balanced development of the country. Noting that the Maoist party will adopt the public-private partnership policy for the welfare and development of the entire private sector, industrialists and business community, he underlined the need for modernization and commercialization of agriculture along with revolutionary land reform for the economic revolution. He said the Maoist party has given special priority to education and health. At the interaction presided over by Society president Dr. Dinesh Raj Bhuju, Vice-president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Krishna Prasad Tamrakar, member of the Constituent Assembly Satyalal Mool, among others, said stress should be given to tourism, agriculture and handicraft industries for overall development of Bhaktapur.

  • FNJ DELEGATION MEETS MINISTER MAHARA
    Kathmandu, May 11: A delegation led by President of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) Dharmendra Jha met with Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara today and drew his attention on immediate steps to be taken by the government for the development of journalism sector. The FNJ drew the attention on guaranteeing press freedom in the preamble itself in the new constitution, immediate implementation of the working journalist laws and relief to the families of all the journalists hit by conflict. The FNJ also demanded action on those involved in the murder of journalist Birendra Saha and immediate making public of the abducted journalist of Kanchanpur, Prakash Thakuri. The delegation also demanded making government media autonomous, arrangement of journalist insurance and free health treatment, making media inclusive starting from the government media, and induction of expelled journalists for faith from the government media, among others, the FNJ said.

  • CHIEF ELECTION COMMISSIONER - MEET
    Kathmandu, May 11: Women representatives of different eleven organizations, working in the field of women's rights and equality, today, met with Chief Election Commissioner, Bhojraj Pokharel and extended congratulations for boosting women's result in Constituent Assembly Election to about 33 percent. They urged the Election Commission to include women in half of the 26 seats that would be nominated by the government. Chief Election Commissioner, Pokharel said his Commission would not have any role in the nomination and asked them to unitedly pressure the government for women's share. He said women candidates were successful in the election with joint cooperation of civil societies, political parties and rights activists and they should be helped to maintain women's seats. Chairperson of Institute of Human Rights Communication, Shova Goutan urged the government to include women in half of the seats that the government is set to nominate for them. Women representatives of Women Security Pressure Group, Institute of Human Rights Communication, Dalit Women's Association, Women for Human Rights, National Network Against Girls Trafficking, Nepal Indigenous Nationalities Women's Federation, Ama Milan Kendra, Advocacy Forum, Bikalpa Gyan Kendra, Women and Politics Center, and Citizen's Voice were present in the meeting. Meanwhile, the representatives organized an interaction program and voiced their concern for including women in the seats.

  • NEPAL CAN DEVELOP HER OWN FEDERALISM MODEL
    Kathmandu, May 11: Swiss expert on federalism, Nicole Toepperwien has said that Nepal can develop her own model rather than imitate from other countries for the development of the federal system. At a programme organized today by the Nepal Council of World Affairs, here today, she said as Nepal has been working very effectively than many experiences of the world during the peace process, Nepal can develop her own model of federalism as per her circumstances in framing the new constitution. Federalism expert Nicole said we can prepare the framework of federal rule from various methods including geography, culture, languages and population, and in all those processes, the distribution of means and resources should be proportional. Citing examples of three tier federalism in local, regional and central level, she said a clear arrangement should be made for who should have the authority including on resources, tax collection, security and foreign relations. Federalism is taken as a means of conflict transformation and sustainable management, Nicole said, adding if the concept of development of federalism is not clear, all this exercise will be meaningless and suggested to be alert towards this.

  • VOLUNTEER TEACHERS – REPORT
    Madhyapur Thimi, May 11: The National Volunteer Service Preparatory Committee submitted its report to the University Grants Commission today. The committee was constituted to prepare the outline and the programme guidelines for mobilizing the youths who have passed the post-graduate level as volunteer teachers in the rural areas. The Commission had constituted a five-member committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Bharat Bahadur Karki in the second week of January this year. The committee presented its report to chairman of the Commission Prof. Dr. Kamal Krishna Joshi.

  • DISABLED CALL OFF FAST
    Kathmandu, May 11: Nepal Disabled Federation today broke the fast that it had organized at the Maitighar Mandala. The fast which had been held calling for ensuring representation of the disabled also while nominating 26 members to the Constituent Assembly was broken at the CPN (Maoist) chairman Prachanda’s request. Chairman Prachanda, who had reached Maitighar to meet the disabled taking part in the fast, pledged to ensure the representation of the disabled also in the Constituent Assembly. The Federation had been organizing various programmes to exert pressure for fulfilling its demand for ensuring the disabled representation in the Constituent Assembly.

  • PRESIDENT THAPA
    Bhimphedi, May 11: President of RPP Nepal, Kamal Thapa has said country would be free from external interference only when new constitution to be formulated could maintain balance with multiparty democracy and constitutional monarchy to protect national indivisibility, and integrity that were preserved by ancestors. Addressing district level party-workers' meeting, organized today at Hetaunda by RPP Nepal, Makawanpur, he said Nepali people wisely made CPN (Maoist) a largest party in the Constituent Assembly Election and they should run the country and formulate the constitution in coordination with all other political parties.

  • CAPITAL PUNISHMENT DOWNSIZED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT
    Beijing, May 11: A Chinese Court has lessened the capital punishment to life imprisonment in the case of narcotic substances trafficking in which two Nepali men were found guilty. The Nepali men benefiting from the new decision are fifty-year-old Kharpa Tamang and Da Ghale of Dhading district. Chinese security took them into custody after they landed in Shanghai Airport concealing 80/90 capsules of narcotic substances in their bodies, fifteen months ago, and after the court's decision they were placed in Chhinpu International Prison of Shanghai. Consular at Nepalese Embassy at Beijing, Nirmal Kafle met them at the prison, recently. Consular Kafle said he met with Head of the Prison and got information that these inmates could be released in parole if they could improve their behavior.
